KIRKS

…You want to explain this. Mick just shrugs. Mister Pelster tells me you were using this flag in his class for an art project. Is that true?

MICK

Mister Pelster is my teacher.

KIRKS

I’m aware of that.

MICK

So, would you believe me if I said it wasn’t true?

KIRKS

Okay, how much trouble do you think you’re in? Mick just shrugs. Then maybe the smart mouth answers could be kept to a minimum. At least until you begin to ascertain just how much trouble you’re in. That seems the much more intelligent choice, don’t you think?

MICK

Okay. Yes. It’s true.

KIRKS

What was the piece about?

MICK

Censorship of art in high schools.

KIRKS

…Really?

Mick just shrugs.

Why was the flag suspended over a Bunsen burner?

Mick just shrugs.

Well, if you don’t know, who does?

MICK

I was trying to show how dangerous and precarious it is to use the flag as the symbol to deny rights to the very citizens that flag is the symbol of protecting.

KIRKS

…Could you say that again.

MICK

Yeah. But I really hate to have to explain my art.

KIRKS

…The thing that troubles me most, and the thing that troubled Mister Pelster, was the halffull can of lighter fluid you’d hidden in the base of your project.

Mr. Kirks produces a can of lighter fluid from out of the paper bag. Mick eyes it.

MICK

I could see where that would be a concern.
